Accounting students in the College of Business at Southern Arkansas University have willingly volunteered to do something most people dread – work on income taxes.
A total of seven students for the Department of Accounting are participating in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program sponsored by the Central Arkansas Development Council (CADC).
The students are donating their time to help local citizens who take part in the tax preparation program.
NaTashia Riley, instructor of accounting at SAU, organized the SAU students to participate in the program.
“These students are interested in helping the community and doing their part,” said Riley. “And it’s giving them great experience they need for their careers.”
Riley is the newest member of the accounting faculty in the College of Business, joining the department in January of 2022.
Riley, worked in private industry before coming to SAU, said she enjoys teaching and working with the students.
“I love it,” said Riley of teaching at SAU. “Instead of sitting behind a desk and looking at a computer screen all day, I get to stand in front of a classroom full of students and teach what I know.”
The program is being held locally at Cadence Bank, and it is open to all members of the public who qualify.
