Art & Design

The Department of Art and Design at Southern Arkansas University offers five concentrations to prepare students for careers in the arts. The Brinson Fine Arts Building features well-lit, ventilated studios for all disciplines and a gallery for exhibits by renowned artists, faculty, and students. A Mac lab provides graphic design students with a professional workspace, and notable artists visit the university each semester.

The Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences offers programs in criminal justice, political science, psychology, and social work. Students gain practical knowledge and skills for careers in public service, research, and counseling. The department emphasizes critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and community engagement.

The Department of History, Political Science, and Geography offers degrees that prepare students for a wide range of careers. Graduates in history enter a variety of professional fields and work as historians in government agencies, archives, museums, libraries, and non-profit institutions.

The mission of the Department of Modern Languages is to provide the portion of a liberal arts education that employs language, literature, and written communication to develop the students’ ability to think critically, understand and appreciate diversity, adhere to ethical values, and communicate effectively in a global environment.

The Department of Performing Arts and Mass Communication offers pre-professional degree programs designed to equip students with the tools necessary to pursue careers in the areas of music, theatre and mass communication, as well as pursue graduate degrees in these fields.
