Reasonable Housing Accommodations

University Housing is committed to providing campus living that is accessible and inclusive and provides reasonable housing accommodations to residents with disabilities.  It is a resident’s responsibility to make their disability known to the University.  Housing accommodations are given consideration upon request and on a case-by-case basis; reasonable accommodations are determined based on documented need.

Submission of a request does not guarantee an accommodation.  Requests are reviewed by Disability Support Services and University Housing, in consultation with other campus professionals, as needed.  Accommodation decisions will consider the resident’s disability-related need(s) in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Fair Housing Act, and other relevant federal, state, local, and campus regulations.  Accommodations cannot be granted for individuals who did not meet all housing deadlines or are otherwise ineligible to live in University housing.

SAU will accept and consider requests for reasonable accommodations in University housing at any time. The individual making the request for accommodation should complete and provide DSS Intake Form and the Reasonable Accommodation Verification Form for University Housing to Disability Services as soon as practicably possible before moving into University housing. However, if the request for accommodation is made fewer than 60 days before the individual intends to move into University housing, SAU cannot guarantee that it will be able to meet the individual’s accommodation needs during the first semester or term of occupancy.

Procedure for Requesting Reasonable Housing Accommodations:

  1. Residents must have applied for University Housing and followed all necessary procedures before requesting accommodations.
  2. In order to request housing accommodations, the resident must complete the Disability Support Services Intake Form to initiate the process and follow the guidelines outlined in the General Housing Accommodations Policy.
  3. Requests may take an extended period of time for processing and response during certain seasons.  Residents will be contacted directly via email in regards to their request and may be expected to participate in an interactive process with staff.  Depending on the accommodation requested, additional information may be required.
  4. If a resident submits a request without providing sufficient information, Disability Support Services will inform the resident of the necessity for more information.  The resident is expected to cooperate with University Housing and Disability Support Services in a timely manner to provide all necessary information.  University Housing and Disability Support Services will only request information to verify the presence of a disability and to assess the need and scope of a reasonable accommodation.

Please Note:

Requests for specific housing locations will be taken into consideration; however, priority will be given to reasonably satisfying the request, regardless of the location.  Decisions regarding where to assign students are solely at the discretion of University Housing.

University Housing is currently unable to guarantee single rooms based solely on a medical diagnosis of ADD/ADHD or a learning disability.
