The main feature of the Senior Design Lab is the dedicated design studio cubicles assigned to three design teams. Each cubicle can easily accommodate three students, and is equipped with a high-end computer equipped with advanced software for design and simulation work. The Senior Design Lab facilities are made available to other students for research projects or course-related projects on request.
Senior Design Cubicles
There are three senior design cubicles, and each cubicle is equipped with a table, three chairs, a high-end computer, a workbench, a steel rack, and a whiteboard. Each cubicle is assigned to a design team for their team meetings, CAD, design, simulation, and analysis work.
The advanced software includes ANSYS with ANSYS Fluent, SolidWorks, and Engineering Equation Solver (EES). Star CCM+ will also be available shortly.
Shimadzu Universal Testing Machine
The Shimadzu universal testing machine is an industrial-grade universal testing machine with a capacity of 500 kN and a maximum ram stroke of 250 mm. Due to lack of space in the Solid Mechanics Lab, this machine has been set up in the Design Lab in the Engineering Building. It came with a front-opening hydraulic grip. Specimen diameter of the machine is from 12 to 50 mm (grip face) for rods and up to 45 mm for flat specimens. For compression testing, the maximum plate diameter is 120 mm.
Band Saw
The WEN metal cutting band saw is capable of operating in both vertical and horizontal positions. Its blade speed can be adjusted to 80, 120, or 200 feet per minute to be compatible with the cutting material. It has beveling vise so that cuts varying anywhere from 0 to 60 degrees can be made. After a cut has been completed, its automatic shutoff turns the blade off, ensuring safe operation.
Desktop Drilling Unit
The RIKON desktop drill press has a five spindle speed of 620–3100 rpm. It can be used to drill a variety of materials. Rugged heavy duty construction of the press provides vibration-free operation.
Heavy-Duty Compact Steel Pedestal Floor Bender
The heavy-duty compact steel pedestal floor bender is used for metal bending, especially pipes. It has a working capacity of one to three inches, and can be used to make a variety of bends on square or solid flat stock.
The bender has a right angle bending capacity of 3/16 in. x 1-1/4 in. or 1/4 in. x 1-1/4 in, a center pin capacity of 1/4 in. (use 1-inch die for greater), and a solid rod capacity of 1/2 in. (use 3-inch die). Its telescoping handle bends flat or square bar stock up to 5/8-inches thick with a maximum width up to 1-15/16 inches, and it includes seven dies: 1 in., 1-1/4 in., 1-1/2 in., 1-3/4 in., 2 in., 2-1/2 in., and 3 in.
SKIL Band Saw
The SKIL band saw is mainly used for wood cutting. Its rack and pinion table provides quick adjustments for height and angle if needed. It also features a 1½-inch dust port that keeps the work area clean and free of dust. The rip fence facilitates straight and accurate cuts, and the LED work light provides a better view of the work piece and cut line.
