Young Professionals – Jeremiah Albert

This is an interview with Jeremiah Albert, a graduate of SAU, who teaches at the Magnolia School District.

What would you say is the greatest source of inspiration at SAU?

The greatest source of inspiration at SAU has been the professors and advisers that I’ve had throughout my undergraduate and graduate journey. They have inspired me to achieve accomplishments that have seemed out of reach, and they continue to support me throughout it all.

Why did you choose your particular major over others?

I chose Middle School Education as my undergraduate major because God has called me to be a teacher, and I needed to follow what He has told me to do. An added bonus is that I truly love teaching and influencing young people, not just helping them learn a subject, but to develop and understand who they should be in life.

What clubs, organizations, or extracurriculars were you involved in?

I was involved in intramural sports, multiple student ministries, such as MBSF and ABS, and I was both a member and the captain of the Fortnite esports team.

What skills do you think are the most important in your field today?

The skills that are most important in my field are communication, collaboration, adaptability, open-mindedness, and humility.

How did you land your first job after graduating?

When I was a senior, I was part of the first full teaching residency year for the College of Education, and I was able to student teach at a school in Texarkana, AR. For that entire year, I conducted myself as if it were a yearlong interview. After I graduated, that same school district offered me a position, and I was grateful to accept it.

Did you face any challenges transitioning from college to the workplace?

To be honest, the transition from college to the workplace was almost seamless. There were a couple of mishaps that almost prevailed, but by the grace of God, He made a way for me to move out to Texarkana, and I was able to be successful. The skills I needed to be a successful educator were crafted and developed during my yearlong residency, and I began to lay the foundation for a successful career after I was hired.

What do you wish you would have known as a college student?

I wish I had known that it would pass like a blur, but I enjoyed it, so I’m grateful to be able to pass on that knowledge to other students who are just getting their college careers started.
