Summer Internship Experience – Jordyn Standley

This is an interview with Jordyn Standley, who was an extern for CHRISTUS St. Michael’s summer of 2025. Working in the float pool, Jordyn gained hands-on experience, built confidence, and formed valuable connections in the healthcare field.

Where did you intern this past summer and what was your role?

I was an intern at CHRISTUS St. Michael’s as a Nurse Extern in the float pool.

How did you find out about this internship opportunity?

I learned about the opportunity through SAU’s nursing department and some of our instructors who shared information about it.

Did this experience change your career goals or perspective on your field?

This experience changed my perspective, especially when it comes to CNAs, sitters, and how float pool management operates. I saw firsthand how floating staff to various units is based on patient census and needs throughout the hospital.

How did this internship help you grow professionally and personally?

This internship helped me grow in ways I never thought I could. I am more confident in myself, not just as a nursing student, but as a future nurse. I became more independent, improved my patient interactions, and enhanced my therapeutic communication skills.

Did you have opportunities to network with professionals in your industry?

Yes, absolutely! I spoke with potential future coworkers, unit managers, and even hospital executives. I had conversations about possible future employment opportunities that may be available after graduation.

What was the best advice you received from a mentor or supervisor?

One of my mentors encouraged me to get as much experience as possible before graduation. It would help me immensely in the transition from an extern and becoming an RN.

What advice would you give to students looking for internships?

Summer internships are one of the best things you can do for yourself and your career. They open doors, give you the chance to practice your skills, and help you grow personally and professionally. It’s a great way to build confidence and become a better you before applying for full-time positions.

How did SAU Career Services help you with your internship search or preparation?

Mallory in Career Services helped curate my resume before applying. She also did multiple mock interviews with me, which made me feel prepared for my interview.
