Summer Internship Experience – Annabelle Simmons

This is an interview with Annabelle Simmons, a senior cybersecurity major who interned with Lockheed Martin during the summer of 2024 in Huntsville, Alabama. She shared her insights into her experience, and advice for fellow students looking for internships.

Where did you intern this past summer and what was your role?

This past summer, I interned as a Cyber Systems Security Engineer at Lockheed Martin Space in Huntsville, AL.

How did you find out about this internship opportunity?

I first connected with Lockheed Martin at SAU’s Career and Internship Fair. That conversation sparked my interest, and after exploring their job portal, I applied for their internship program.

Did this experience change your career goals or perspective on your field?

It strengthened my passion for cybersecurity and confirmed that I’m on the right career path. The experience also helped me see how valuable my skill set is and how I can use it to make a real difference in my community.

How did this internship help you grow professionally and personally?

This internship provided me with invaluable skills, meaningful industry connections, hands-on experience in my field, and the opportunity to earn certifications that will enhance my credentials and appeal to future employers.

Did you have opportunities to network with professionals in your industry?

Absolutely. I was able to connect and collaborate with professionals throughout Lockheed Martin Space. Everyone was welcoming and eager to share knowledge, which made the experience even more enriching.

What was the best advice you received from a mentor or supervisor?

Being new to a field doesn’t make your ideas any less valuable. Interns and entry-level employees bring fresh perspectives—and those insights can lead to innovative solutions.

What advice would you give to students looking for internships?

Keep applying! Rejections are part of the process, so don’t let them discourage you. I applied to 40–50 internships, and receiving daily rejection emails was tough—but remember, you only need one ‘yes’ to land the right opportunity. Stay persistent, keep refining your resume, and believe in your abilities. That’s how I secured an internship with Lockheed Martin!

How did SAU Career Services help you with your internship search or preparation?

SAU Career Services supported me in so many ways! I first learned about Lockheed Martin’s Internship Program at the Fall 2023 Career and Internship Fair. To strengthen my application, I attended a Resume Workshop that helped me refine my resume before applying. When the interview opportunity came, I utilized the Career Closet to find a professional outfit, ensuring I could present myself confidently and make a strong impression!
