A Freshman Perspective on Career Services

Although I am only beginning my freshman year at Southern Arkansas University, I have felt connected to this campus for many years. My sister attended SAU, and I grew up watching her college journey unfold. From attending Mulegates to walking through the heart of campus, I thought I understood what it meant to be a Mulerider. However, now that I am a student myself, I realize there is much more to college than simply knowing where buildings are located. Freshman year is about learning how to balance classes, friendships, and new responsibilities while also preparing for the future.

One of the most valuable resources I discovered early on is Career Services. Many freshmen assume this office is only for seniors who are preparing to graduate, but I quickly learned that Career Services is designed for all students. They provide guidance at every stage of the college journey, and their support can make a significant difference in how prepared we are when opportunities arise.

Career Services offers resume workshops to help transform even the simplest experiences into professional skills. They provide mock interviews that give students the confidence to answer questions thoughtfully and professionally. They also connect students with part-time jobs, internships, and leadership opportunities that help build experience long before graduation.

Attending events hosted by Career Services has also shown me the importance of networking. Meeting employers and alumni not only helps students discover career possibilities but also demonstrates the power of building connections early. These experiences remind me that the choices I make as a freshman can shape the opportunities available to me as a senior.

What stands out most is that Career Services makes professional development approachable. They understand that students may feel nervous or unprepared, and they create an encouraging environment where every question is welcome. Whether it’s learning how to create a resume, preparing for an interview, or simply exploring career paths, their team is ready to help.

As someone who has watched a sibling graduate from SAU, I know how quickly four years can pass. That is why I believe it is so important for freshmen to take advantage of Career Services now. Starting early allows us to build confidence, gain experience, and enter our careers with a strong foundation.

For my fellow students, my advice is simple: don’t wait. Walk into Career Services during your first year. Ask questions, participate in their events, and let them help guide your journey. The earlier we begin, the more prepared we will be for whatever comes after SAU.
