At your choral audition you will need to prepare the following:
“Oh Shenandoah” in the key of your choosing. You will sing “Oh Shenandoah” without accompaniment.
Your director will need to fill out the Director’s Recommendation Form prior to your on-campus audition.
During your on-campus audition, you will be assessed in the following areas:
- Ability to sight-read in both major and minor keys using solfege (Movable or fixed do)(Do or La based minor)
- Ability to sight-read from a choral octavo on a voice part that corresponds to your voice
- Ability to read rhythms in both duple and compound meters
- Tonal Memory
- Ability to hear notes within chords of varying quality (major, minor, diminished, quartal, etc.)
- Vocal tone
- Intonation
- Vocal Range/Tessitura
- Singing Technique
Students who do not plan to be a music major, but wish to sing in SAU choirs, do not need to prepare another solo.
For perspective voice majors: Sing a prepared piece suitable for recital or contest. You might consider a selection from 24 Italian Songs and Arias, the First Book of Soprano/Mezzo/Tenor/Baritone Songs, or the Selected Solos for Contest series. Please bring a CD of the accompaniment with you to your audition as well as an extra copy of your music.
