The Staff Senate met on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in Reynolds 205. Senators in attendance were Wendy Burge, Marcela Brunson, Gaye Calhoun, LaTricia Davis, Brenda Garrett, Charles Honza, Keli Honza, Essie Moore, Shawana Reed, Becki Talley, Houston Taylor, Shelly Whaley and Donald Wray. Visitors included Lavana Kindle.
Approval of Minutes
The meeting was called to order by President Shelly Whaley. A motion to accept the minutes of March 11, 2009 was made by LaTricia Davis and seconded by Gaye Calhoun.
Old Business
There was no old business.
Committee Reports
Staff Breakfast Committee
Brenda Garrett reported that the staff breakfast went very well this year. The special music was a hit with everyone. There was a short discussion about what area would be in charge of next year’s breakfast.
Commencement Committee
Charles Honza reported on the commencement committee meeting. The graduation ceremony will be begin at 7:00 on May 8. It will be on the mall area, unless inclement weather forces the ceremony to move to the gym. The nursing ceremony will be at 4:00 in Harton.
Staff Senate Elections
Houston Taylor reported on the staff senate elections. He has the lists sorted and is ready to send out. The senators will take office May1. Any senator that is rotating off this time is eligible for re-election.
New Business
Faculty/Staff Picnic
The faculty/staff picnic will be on April 24. If anyone is helping with the picnic, they should be there by 4:00.
Staff Senate Meeting Time Change
Shelly Whaley discussed changing the time of the staff senate meetings. She noted that a senator was considering resignation due to being on other job-related committees that meet at the same time as the Staff Senate. There was a discussion about changing the staff senate meeting time until the third Wednesday of the month instead of the second Wednesday. Everyone was in agreement and the time will change to the third Wednesday of the month.
Other
Questions for the Senate
A staff member had asked the senate if there was a recycling program on the SAU campus. Shelly Whaley noted she is not aware of a formal recycling program on the SAU campus at this time. There was discussion about how to get one started. Shelly said she will check with Roger about how the staff senate could initiate the program.
Adjournment
The motion to adjourn was made by Houston Taylor and seconded by Marcela Brunson. The next scheduled meeting will be May 20, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in Reynolds 205.
