Staff Senate Minutes
July 13, 2006
The Staff Senate met on July 13, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in Reynolds 210. Senators in attendance were Jill Bond, Rebecca Chiles, Wayne Garner, Brenda Garrett, Art Horne, Mary Hubbard, Diane Johnson, Pat King, Beth Scroggins, Linda Smith, Cledis Stuart, Houston Taylor, David Wingfield, and Donald Wray. Julie Stroebele will serve as proxy for Dr. Roger Guevara.
Approval of Minutes
The meeting was called to order by President Houston Taylor. A motion to accept the minutes was made by Cledis Stuart and seconded by Beth Scroggins. The motion passed.
Old Business
The dedication ceremony for the Earl Miller Bench has been set for Saturday, October 14 at 11:00 a.m. Responsibility for organizing the dedication was assigned to Pat King and Diana Johnson.
Committee Reports
Health Promotion
The committee research has indicated that Arkansas is among the most obese states. The committee is in the process of forming a mission statement and looking at various ideas for promoting more healthy lifestyles at SAU. New Business
A question was presented to the senate body concerning why faculty and staff members must pay course fees. At present faculty and staff members receive a 100% tuition waiver on classes taken, but must pay the course fees. Houston read a response from Roger Giles that stated that fees are added, as at other universities, to cover specific costs, and to his knowledge have never been covered by a waiver at SAU. There was much discussion on this issue which progressed to a topic previously debated by the senate- refunding staff/faculty waivers to the student when other aid covered their expenses. It was evident from the opinions expressed that the senate is not in agreement with this policy.
More time was needed to consider these policies, so a motion was made by Brenda Garrett and seconded by Wayne Garner that we table this issue today and re-examine it at the next meeting. The motion passed.

The Staff Back to School meeting of August 3, 2006 will serve as the August meeting of the Senate. The next official Staff Senate Meeting will be September 13, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in Reynolds 210.
