Staff Senate Minutes
May 14, 2003
The Staff Senate had its third meeting of the year on May 14, 2003. Those members in attendance were Gaye Calhoun, Very Camp, Charles Honza, Keli Honza, Jason Goodrich, Sarah Jennings, Robert Jones, Essie Moore, Kellye Ogle, Beth Scroggins, Tommy Slaughter, Cledis Stuart, Sarajane Telford, Mark Trout, and David Wingfield. Guests included LaTricia Davis, Lisa Harwell, Jim McCollum, Debra Sturdivant, Sandra Walker and Shelly Whaley.
President Keli Honza called the meeting to order. Peggy Walters made a motion to approve the minutes from the last meeting. Cledis Stuart seconded the motion.
President Honza then passed around responses from the administration to questions that had been posed to them by the staff. One of the questions dealt with the school’s policy on the towing of vehicles. Currently a vehicle is towed as a “last resort.” If a vehicle has been sitting in the same place for quite a while then it will be towed. This action, however, has to be approved by Roger Giles. “The boot” is not used at this time because of the liability that it causes the college. Other schools that use this method of penalty have to pay for the damages that it may cause to the vehicle.
An average of 450 tickets are written in a month. Of these 450, five to ten are appealed. A “Parking Committee” was suggested by Sarah Jennings, but Beth Scroggins thought that action should occur after Jason Goodrich discusses these matters more in depth with Roger. Peggy Walters nominated David Wingfield to be a representative for the Staff Senate at the Faculty Senate meetings regarding parking issues. David accepted this responsibility. President Honza suggested she and David might contact the Faculty Senate to make sure they would be in agreement with David’s attendance.
A recommendation had been made to look at the possibility of flexibility in the four-day workweek regarding the thirty-minute lunch break. Would it be feasible for some to take an hour lunch and work until 6:00 p.m. in the evening rather than the usual 5:30 p.m? After consulting with many of our colleagues it seems that the vast majority of the ones questioned wanted to keep the hours the way they have been the last several years – 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Mark Trout then reported that the Staff Breakfast would be held on Monday, May 19th at 8:00 a.m. in the Bruce Center Dining Hall. He also mentioned that having it the Monday after graduation is the worst possible date… so that issue will probably be taken up at a later date!
The next meeting was set for June 11, 2003 at 3:30 p.m., in Wilson Hall 203.
President Honza asked if there was further business to address, whereupon there was none. She then asked for a motion to adjourn.
