Young Professionals – Haylee Hines

This is an interview with Haylee Hines, a graduate of SAU who is currently serving as the Social Media Specialist for Brookshire Grocery Company Headquarters. While she initially had her sights on a career in television media, her journey has taken her in new directions.

What would you say is the greatest source of inspiration at SAU?

In my short few years post-graduation and beyond the college campus, it has become clear that the saying ‘Feels Like Home’ is much more than just words — it’s the why. It’s why we choose SAU, why we participate in on-campus activities, why we strive to do our best in the classroom, and why many alumni go on to accomplish great things. On campus, I knew I could seek inspiration and guidance from my leadership and peers. That support inspired me to work hard and walk alongside them, with the hope that one day I, too, could have that same positive impact on others.

Why did you choose your particular major over others?

As a child, I was always fascinated by the news. I grew up watching KARK 4 and the Today Show, and as I got older, my love for staying informed about the world around me never faded. I knew I wanted to pursue a career in media, one that would allow me to communicate with others in various ways.  After doing some research, I discovered that Mass Communication was the perfect path to make that dream a reality. Luckily, SAU offered that degree plan, and the rest is history!

What clubs, organizations, or extracurriculars were you involved in?

While on campus, I was a member of the Mulerider Cheer Squad, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Student Activities Executive Board, served as a VISTA Summer Associate for 2 years, and I was fortunate enough to have been chosen for the 2022 and 2023 Homecoming Court!

What skills do you think are the most important in your field today?

The ability to communicate effectively with others is by far my most valuable asset in this field, and honestly, it’s a game-changer in any profession. When you can confidently speak with people you don’t know, hold engaging conversations, and truly listen and respond with intention, you set yourself apart from the rest. I also believe developing a diverse skill set makes you valuable to a company in multiple ways, turning you into a high-value employee. Having a lot on your plate may feel overwhelming at times, but it pays off in the long run. You’ll gain confidence, resilience, and the belief that you can take on anything!

How did you land your first job after graduating?

My first job after college was at KTVE in West Monroe, LA, where I worked as a Multimedia Journalist. With little to no on-camera experience, I decided to just dive in and give it my all. I created and refined my resume, then used the few clips I was fortunate to have been featured in at SAU as my media reel. After applying to multiple stations, only one reached out, and that one opportunity made all the difference. I showcased my communication skills and passion for the industry, and thankfully, I was offered the job. I accepted it and ran with it!

Did you face any challenges transitioning from college to the workplace?

Thankfully, my transition from college to the workplace wasn’t difficult. I spent a lot of time in college juggling multiple extracurriculars. I believe that a busy college lifestyle helped to set me up for a smoother transition. I have enjoyed developing myself as a professional and know that this is just the beginning.

What do you wish you had known as a college student?

As a college student, I wish I had known how difficult it would be as a working adult to stay connected with my peers and friends. I would have spent more time bonding and creating memories with them! It’s so easy to get comfortable with college life and forget that the people you care about won’t always be nearby. Adulting and entering the workforce can be stressful, and as you grow, those who bring you peace and comfort may no longer be just a doorstep away. Cherish the moments you have with them while they’re close!
