This is an interview with Bailey Cole, a dedicated student at Southern Arkansas University, who excelled in various leadership positions throughout her academic journey.
What leadership roles have you held at SAU?
I have held various leadership positions on campus, currently serving as a Resident Assistant, Peer Academic Coach, and Vice President of the Student Government Association (SGA). Additionally, I am the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Chair for Phi Mu.
What helped you gain these roles?
There have been two main sources of success for me that have helped me gain these roles. First, my parents support. They have always been a great support system and push me to be the best I can be. Second, my friends have been the best in encouraging me and helping me through my roles. They each gave me a network that was strong and opened my opinions quickly. If I did not network through friends or family, I don’t think I would have been so lucky in my opportunities.
What skills have you gained through the roles?
I have personally learned a lot in my opportunities and roles as a leader. I have learned communication and how to efficiently conversate with others. With communication, I gained trust in my roles and my fellow peers. I became adaptable and managed my time wisely. I think being adaptable is the key to success. This characteristic gives the ability to accomplish different things in different areas.
Why are these skills essential for career advancement?
These skills are key for a workplace and benefit me in looking for advancement. Effectively communicating and sharing ideas, while also being transparent about gains and benefits for the company, allows me to position myself as a valuable employee. This fosters trust in me within my career field, enabling open communication about both challenges and accomplishments. Also with adaptability, I can gain opportunities in my career that could advance me to a high position. To thrive in your career as it progresses, it is crucial to utilize effective time management skills. Time management gives you a structure to accomplish goals or even gain extra time through the day.
What has been the best resource on campus to help you succeed in these roles?
My network has been the best resource for me and has brought forth many opportunities. For instance, I was a student worker for Career Services and they have helped guide me in how to network and use my skills in real life scenarios. I also gained opportunities through housing employees and other faculty members. I have made sure to develop real, personal relationships on campus, so I can advance and succeed further on in my careers.
