College is more than just attending classes and earning a degree—it’s about growing personally and professionally. One of the best ways to make the most of your college experience while strengthening your resume is by joining clubs and organizations. Getting involved on campus not only demonstrates time management and teamwork to potential employers but also shows that you are engaged in activities beyond academics.
Why Join a Club or Organization?
Including college activities on a resume is optional, but it could set you apart from other candidates, especially if you actively participated in multiple organizations. Employers value well-rounded candidates who can balance responsibilities and collaborate effectively with others. Whether you join an academic, social, athletic, political, spiritual, international, or cultural organization, being an active member helps you develop valuable skills that can translate into the workplace.
Opportunities at SAU
SAU offers more than 60 organizations, providing countless ways to get involved and make connections. If you’re looking to engage with peers in your field of study, there are clubs dedicated to specific majors such as Criminal Justice, Biology, History, Pre-Health, Pre-Vet, FBLA Collegiate, and Pre-Law. Beyond academic-related organizations, SAU also has clubs focused on hobbies and special interests, including Robotics, Encore, Cosplay, and Fishing. Students interested in getting involved in residential life can join the Resident Hall Association. Those looking to be part of a social organization can explore 16 different Greek organizations on campus. For students looking to grow in their faith or engage in political discussions, SAU offers over 14 spiritual organizations and multiple political groups where you can connect with like-minded individuals and participate in meaningful discussions and events.
Career Benefits
Being an active member of student organizations provides valuable career advantages that go beyond the classroom. Employers recognize that involvement in student organizations helps build essential career skills, such as leadership, time management, teamwork, networking, and communication. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), 80% of recruiters seek candidates with strong teamwork skills, and 90% of recruiters look for students with the ability to solve problems.
If you haven’t joined a club or organization yet, now is the time! Explore your interest, meet new people, and build skills that will help you beyond college. Being active on campus tells employers that you take the initiative and are eager to grow both personally and professionally. So, take that step, make lasting memories, and get involved!
