The Southwest Association of Student Assistance Programs (SWASAP) recently hosted its 10th annual Student Leadership Conference (SLC) at the River Bend Retreat Center in Glen Rose, Texas. More than 85 students and staff came from Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and across the state of Texas to attend this leadership conference for students involved in TRIO programs from the Southwest area.
The conference theme “Show Me the Money!” consisted of sessions on financial literacy and leadership skills. Conference co-chairs Rosario Riley of the University of Central Oklahoma and Jeff Kahlden of Weatherford College planned three days of application leadership, guest speakers and community service for the students while at the retreat center. The students learned about communication, money management, working with others and many other life skills that will enable them to become more effective leaders.
Students also had an opportunity to participate in a scholarship essay contest with winners receiving scholarships ranging from $350 to $1,000. Also, the conference committee awarded $250 leadership performance scholarships to students who excelled at the conference.
The Southern Arkansas University Upward Bound programs were represented by Jamie Smith, Outreach Coordinator for UB II, and Carla Williamson, Tutor Coordinator for UB I, and four students (2 from each program). Each student submitted 3 essays, and all four students were awarded scholarships. Magnolia High School junior, Gabrielle Davis (UB I) received $200; Hope High school senior, Torre Greene (UBII) received $500; Stephens High School junior, Desiderrian Jenkins (UB I) received $1000; and Blevins High School senior, Jasmine King (UB II) received $900. Desiderrian Jenkins and Jasmine King received performance scholarships for their leadership skills, outstanding performance, and attitude while attending the conference. Desiderrian Jenkins, the overall winner, received the largest scholarship award.
