Below are answer to common questions around the Duo and MFA system. If your question is not answered below, please contact us at helpdesk@saumag.edu.
Two Factor Authentication is a tool that is used to confirm that when you’re logging into your accounts it is really you logging in. It adds a second layer of security by making sure that you’re the only person able to log in to your accounts even if someone else were to have your password.
Duo is in an opt in stage and while it is currently not mandatory it will be forced in April 2025. It is highly encouraged that students go ahead and enroll to work out any issues that may occur, so the use of Duo won’t affect one’s classwork in the future.
Passwords are becoming easier to compromise. Duo Push ensures that even in the event of a password compromise your account cannot be accessed. Duo will also alert users in the event that someone is trying to log in to their account. Duo never saves passwords; the duo authentication process is independent from the user’s username and password.
Duo adds another layer of security to users accounts to protect the account from being compromised.
Across higher education the number of compromised accounts has increased dramatically. Multiple universities across the United States of America have adopted MFA to reduce the number of compromised accounts occurring. Requiring all users at SAU to implement Duo will aid the university in lowering the number of compromised accounts.
If you do not have a smartphone, you can still register with Duo by following these steps:
- Register with Duo Online and Select the “Phone Number” option when prompted
- Select whether you’d prefer a Text Message or Phone Call to receive your passcode for Duo
OR
- Contact SAUs IT Department for a one-time password key fob. These key fobs provide a 6-digit login code that can be used in place of the Duo Mobile app.
- The first fob is free; if it is lost or damaged, replacements are $20
Passcodes are sent via Duo to perform Two-Factor authentication. They can be done via push notification, Text Message, or Temporary Passcodes that are only usable for 30 minutes.
The Duo app works on Android and Apple Smartphone Devices
Contact SAU IT for a password key fob for authentication.

Yes, you can enroll duo on multiple devices! You are encouraged to do so as a backup authentication in case anything happens to one of your devices.
Please check settings to ensure that Duo Push notifications are enabled. Then make sure you have a good Wi-Fi or Cellular data connection as a weak connection can delay or interrupt a Duo push notification.
You should report all Duo push notifications that you did not generate as soon as possible to SAUs IT Department. This may be a sign of someone attempting unauthorized access to your account, and your password may be compromised. Deny the Push Notification and then confirm that it’s a fraudulent attempt. You should then change your password if this occurs.
Yes, the passcode option on the Duo app does not require Wi-Fi or cellular data and will work while in airplane mode. To use the passcode option, visit the Duo app on your smartphone and tap the key icon to receive a passcode. Enter this passcode into the Duo prompt when logging in.
If many authentication failures take place in a short amount of time, your account may be locked for 30 minutes.
The Duo mobile app only provides two factor authentication. It does not access any personal information on your device other than the authentication token. The app can be used on many other platforms outside of SAU for authentication and can be used beyond your time with the university.
