This minor familiarizes students with the histories, thoughts, politics, literature, geography, socialization, economics, and cultures of Africans and African Americans. This knowledge is helpful for all students, but especially those who will work with varied communities or who seek further study.
Minor Requirements:
SOC 1013 – Introduction to Africana Studies
SOC 3003 – Multiculturalism
Select 9 hours from the following:
ENGL 4613 – African American Literature
ENGL 4683 – Introduction to Francophone Literature
HUM 1001 – Encore
HUM 2001 – Encore
HUM 3001 – Encore
HUM 4001 – Encore
HIST 3183 – African History
HIST 4093 – African American History
MUS 2023 – Music and Culture of Africa and its Diaspora
PSCI 4043 – African American Politics
THEA 4013 – Survey of Black Theatre and Film
Or other courses not on the above list in which:
- a significant amount of material would fall under Africana Studies, or
- students engage in a major project related to Africana Studies.
Examples: Students studying or participating in plays by African American playwrights in theatre classes, students studying jazz, hip hop, or other music or dance with African roots in music or dance classes, students studying Afro-Germans in a Modern Germany class, or students studying African American farmers in an AGED course, etc.
The Department of History, Political Science, and Geography chair will decide if a course or project will qualify.
