Volunteer Services

Southern Arkansas University is proud to take steps toward a more sustainable future, starting right here on campus. Our recycling program helps reduce waste and keep our Mulerider community clean and long-lasting.

Why Recycle?

Recycling is one of the simplest ways to make a big impact. It helps:

  • Save energy and reduce unnecessary waste
  • Keep reusable materials out of landfills
  • Support a circular economy where materials are used, reused, and repurposed,
as well as support our local non-profit, Abilities Unlimited!

By recycling, SAU students, staff, and faculty can make a meaningful difference for
future generations, starting today!

How to Recycle on Campus

Recycling at SAU is easy and accessible!

The SAU Recycling Trailer, located in the Reynolds parking lot is the central drop-off
point for your recyclable materials. Open daily, this trailer is a one-stop spot for sorting
and disposing of items properly.

What You Can Recycle:

  • Paper (clean, dry, no food stains)
  • Cardboard (flattened, clean)
  • Plastics #1 & #2 (rinsed)
  • Aluminum & tin cans (rinsed)

What to Avoid:

  • Plastic bags
  • Food-contaminated/non-rinsed containers
  • Styrofoam
  • Electronics or batteries

If you’re ever unsure: when in doubt, throw it out! Contaminated recycling does more
harm than good.

Molly Ann Recycles!

SAU’s beloved mule, Molly Ann, is leading the charge for campus sustainability. Check
out this news article detailing the impact that recycling has on SAU’s campus and
community.

Recycling Trailer Launch

In 2025, SAU unveiled its new on-campus Recycling Trailer, a partnership effort
between SAU and the Abilities Unlimited Recycling Center. The trailer is part of a
broader initiative to reduce waste, raise awareness, and provide real-world sustainability
education.
