Undergraduate FAQs
Can I complete my degree program entirely online?
We have fully online options for our Elementary K-6 and Middle School programs. However, starting in your Junior year, you’ll need to fulfill field experience requirements, which involve spending time in K-6 classrooms. These hours can be completed at schools near your home or workplace.
Is residency a full year or one semester?
Arkansas licensure laws require that all candidates complete a year-long residency (formerly student teaching) that spans your final two semesters.
I work as a paraprofessional. Can I use my hours for field experiences?
Yes, some of your hours will count toward your field experience requirement; however, you will still need to spend additional time in classrooms. This classroom time can be completed at the school or district where you work.
Are there paid opportunities during residency?
Yes. SAU offers multiple paid residency options. View the Residency Info page and speak with your advisor about opportunities.
Are scholarships and financial aid available?
Yes. Our faculty work closely with the financial aid office to provide up-to-date information on scholarships, grants, and other financial aid options. Visit the Scholarships page for funds available specifically for future educators.
What if I want to teach in a subject that doesn’t have an undergraduate licensure program here?
We’ve created 4+1 agreements with several departments that let you earn your bachelor’s degree plus a Master of Arts in Teaching in just five years, leading to both a master’s degree and a teaching license. If your subject doesn’t have a 4+1 option, you can still complete your bachelor’s in any field, then enter our MAT program and earn your license in as little as 18 months.
