School Counseling Master of Education

Summer Experience

COUN 6763 Development and Administration of a School Counseling Program

This long-summer, hybrid course is typically taken during the second summer in a candidate’s plan of study. The online and in-person assignments for this course are based on the ASCA National Model’s four quadrants and themes.

Candidates work online in professional learning communities using case studies and the latest resources, and tools from departments of education and the American School Counseling Association. This course pinnacles in mid-summer during five face-to-face days on campus.

Five-Day Intensive Experience

On a Sunday afternoon in late June, candidates arrive at the beautiful SAU Magnolia campus, eager to enlist in the various roles assigned to school counselors. For five days school counselors in training serve as leaders and advocates for hundreds of day campers attending Muleriders Kids College.

Early morning responsibilities include escorting 1st – 5th-grade campers to designated classes in Grand Hall, as well as, teaching 3rd and 4th graders social/emotional lessons in “Muleriders Have GRIT.” Afternoons are reserved for class time to reflect on practices and recognize ASCA National Model components used throughout the day. Evenings are spent planning for subsequent MKC lessons and meeting with secondary students to hear first-hand the importance of equity for all and school counselors serving as change agents in schools.

Housing and lunches are provided by the Mulerider Kids College Volunteer Program; volunteers must apply and submit proof of a completed background check.
