Game, Animation, & Simulation Design
Artist Biography: Korenna Goodrick, born in Warrensburg, Missouri and raised in Maud, Texas, has a passion for the arts and video games. This passion was cultivated by her mother through arts, crafts, and games until the day she died in 2003. Despite that, Korenna’s passions only grew stronger, pushing her to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Game, Animation, and Simulation Design. Her desire to make the art more fulfilling drives her to also pursue a minor in Writing.
Korenna, over the course of her time at Southern Arkansas University, developed a strong passion for character, environment, and prop concept art as well as creating textures for both three-dimensional and two-dimensional assets. She applies her passions to her works which primarily fall into the fantasy style, containing themes of ethereal and elemental beings as well as magic. She accentuates these themes with her use of bright colors like neon pinks and greens.
Influenced by the likes of C. H. Greenblatt, Korenna takes his technique of using textures on two-dimensional art and applies it to her own concept art pieces and other artworks in order to create interest in the work. By filling in the spaces that would usually only be solid color with texture, she adds a new level of complexity that aids in guiding the eye across the piece.
Three of Korenna’s works were featured in the Second Annual Juried SAU Student Art Show and three others were featured in the Third Annual Juried SAU Student Art Show. She has also participated in three Global Game Jams and one Game Jam run by the SAU Game Development Club where she serves as treasurer. She also works as a 2D midground asset artist for the Monochrome Workshop, an indie game development team affiliated with DVNC Tech.
Korenna seeks to work in the video game industry as a concept or texture artist, but she will gladly work in 2D asset creation and 3D hard-surface modeling. She knows of the competitive nature of the game development industry and uses that knowledge to push herself to create better art in order to reach her goals.
Korenna's Work
Bubble Space
This project is comprised of objects suspended in dark blue space, being a revolver, a sword, and a pair of heels, surrounded by bubbles filled with blue and pink light. This concept was born from my desire to have stars in my pieces, but I could not figure out how to do so. Through trial and error, I developed the bubbles which give the pieces a fantasy twist that grant new depth to the collection. To further this depth, I used Damascus steel for the sword and the heels in order to infuse even the metal with a swirling, dreamy effect to add to the interstellar fantasy aesthetic.
Hope to Cope
This project is a zine filled with my own poetry illustrated by myself. Each poem and illustration were born from emotions and moments in my life that bring me great pain and bittersweet joy. These concepts are illustrated and emphasized by the use of light and darkness as well as disturbing and hopeful imagery. I used these elements to make the reader feel unsettled and anxious at the beginning and hopeful at the end in order to take them on my own emotional journey.
The Realm of Soul
This project derives from a story I have been working on since elementary school called The Elements. These concepts and illustrations serve to illustrate the bright, ethereal nature of the Realm of Soul as well as its keeper, the Seer of Soul. Using the glowworm caves of New Zealand and the glowing beaches of the Maldives as inspiration, I built this world up from a magical reality.
