The Graduate Certificate in Elementary Education program at Southern Arkansas University is designed to enable candidates who graduated from SAU in the BSE Elementary Education (non-licensure) program to continue their career in education and be prepared to earn a license in K-6 education.
Candidates in this certificate program are required to uphold the same knowledge, skills, and dispositions set forth in the catalog for the Master of Arts in Teaching Program.

Admission to the Educator Preparation Program (EPP)
Pre-candidates who plan to follow the Educator Preparation Programs must, in consultation with their advisor, submit a formal application for admission. Applicants should work closely with a College of Education and Human Performance advisor to apply.
Criteria for Admission to the Educator Preparation Program (EPP)
Pre-candidates apply for unconditional admission to the EPP MAT program during their final semester of their senior year. Pre-candidates must work with the MAT program advisor to apply.

Specific Requirements for Master of Arts in Teaching Certificate
Each candidate for the Certificate Master of Arts in Teaching: Elementary Education must complete 12 semester hours of coursework.
MAT Initial Course
(Required to be taken during first term)
- MAT 5103 – Holistic Pedagogy (fall, spring, summer I)
Supervised Experience
(choose 6 credit hours)
- MAT 6033 – Internship I (first year of teaching) (fall, spring) and
- MAT 6043 – Internship II (first year of teaching) (fall, spring)
or
- MAT 6053 – Residency I (fall, spring) and
- MAT 6063 – Residency II (fall, spring)
Note:
All candidates can apply for a provisional license upon unconditional admission and being hired to teach in the area in which they have passed Praxis II.
Education Elective (3 Hours)
Three-hour education elective from another advanced program (see advisor for more information)
Professional Responsibilities and Requirements for Arkansas Teacher Licensure
Candidates in the MAT Certificate in Elementary Education program are held to the same licensure requirements as those listed under the MAT degree program. Please see the information above for more details.
