Life after Midterms

November 5th, 2009

Hopefully midterms went well for your student! However, in the case of some, things may not have gone so smoothly. IF this is the situation, I would like to inform you of some helpful places we have on campus here at Southern Arkansas University, where your student is welcome to receive any help he or she may need.

We have the Tutoring Center, located on the first floor of Wilson Hall. Students can drop by to receive assistance in any difficult courses. There are special tutors for areas such as Spanish, French, Chinese, Math, and Composition. If students are unable to receive the help that they are looking for, the staff at the Tutoring Center will be happy to assist your student in finding the help they need. Their daytime hours are:

  • Monday through Thursday – 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Friday – 9:00 a.m. until Noon

Peer tutors are trained, recommended by SAU professors, and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Their night time hours are:

  • Monday through Thursday – 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

For more information concerning the Tutoring Center, contact Mrs. Patty Strickland, Tutor Coordinator at (870) 235-4385 or e-mail plstrickland@saumag.edu.

SAU also has a Writing Center where students can go for friendly critiquing of their works for classes from Composition to Psychology to Biology. Your student can go here Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m -8 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. -1 p.m., and Sunday from 3 p.m. -8 p.m. The staff will be happy to review your student’s work and help them to correct it.

We also offer Supplemental Instruction, or SI. Supplemental Instruction is a series of weekly group review sessions for students taking historically difficult courses. At each session students are guided through the class material by an SI leader, a competent student possessing at least an overall 3.0 GPA who has been recommended by the SAU faculty and who has previously made an A or B in the subject under that instructor.

Also, please encourage your student to speak with their professor if they are having difficulty. Professors are here, not only for in-class educational purposes, but also to assist your student in developing a well-rounded education outside of class as well.

See the Calendar of Events under the Useful Links for Parents section to the right for a complete overview of what is offered during November, December, and January. This includes holiday, registration, and final exam dates.

As always, please feel free to contact me at dyallen@saumag.edu or by telephone at
870-235-4012 with any concerns you may have.
