Students may submit up to three (3) original works in the categories of poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction (which includes personal narratives, opinion essays, memoirs, travelogues, etc. but not academic essays); no more than three total submissions will be considered. Prizes of $100, $75, and $50 will be offered for submissions in each of the three areas. Submissions are due by 11:59 pm on Wednesday, April 15. The following rules apply to all submissions:
- Students may not win more than once in the same category.
- Works should be unpublished and by a single author.
- The student’s name should not appear in the submission.
- The student must provide a Muleriders email address, or their work may not be considered.
- File names should not include the student’s name. Ideally, the file name will match the title of the work.
- Students must confirm that they have not used generative AI to create or edit their work(s); submissions flagged for AI or plagiarism will be withdrawn from the Contest.
- Any work longer than 3000 words (not counting a Works Cited or biography) will be disqualified.
The SAU Writing Contest is supported by the Department of Modern Languages; SAU faculty members will evaluate the entries without knowing the authors of the works they are judging.
