Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to have an appointment?
Walk-ins are welcome, but scheduled appointments take priority.
How long does a session take?
A typical conference lasts 30 minutes; however, a longer paper may require more time.
What should I bring to my session?
We recommend you bring any drafts or instructions for the assignment. However, you are not required to bring anything.
What if I do not have time to visit the writing center during your hours?
You can submit your work electronically and receive feedback from an SAU writing consultant. See Online Submissions for more information.
What is the difference between an online conference and a face-to-face conference?
A face-to-face conference in the Writing Center provides the opportunity to discuss your work and receive immediate feedback. Online submissions can be submitted via this form at your convenience; a consultant will provide constructive recommendations regarding your work within a timely manner.
What is a writing consultant?
Writing consultants are fellow students from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines whose training includes a course on how to work with writers.
What kind of writing can I bring to the Writing Center?
We work with any writing at any stage of the writing process, whether you are brainstorming, working on a draft, or polishing your work before submitting it. We also accept writing you may not be doing for a class, including creative writing, resumes, or an application for graduate school.
Will you proofread or edit my paper?
While we may begin with more important aspects of your paper—including content, structure, and citation—grammar and mechanics do matter…and we will discuss as time permits.
Can I drop off my work or bring in a paper for someone else?
We require that the writer be present for the discussion. If you submit online, you should submit your own work.
What if I am working on a group paper?
We will gladly work with you over the section you have written. Your group—and the paper—will benefit most if everyone can come at the same time.
Will I get a good grade on my work after coming to the Writing Center?
Your professor is responsible for evaluating your work.
