In celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service, twenty-six SAU+AmeriCorps VISTA Fellows rolled up their sleeves and gave back to the Magnolia community on January 20, 2025. Inspired by Dr. King’s legacy of service, the Fellows dedicated their time and energy to two vital community projects: the SAU Community Garden and Compassion’s Foundation, Inc.
At the SAU Community Garden, VISTA Fellows worked tirelessly, planting seeds, and tilling in ground gardening plots. Ryan Wells SAU Community Garden Fellow stated, “Thanks to the SAU VISTA Fellows, the SAU Community Garden was able to start over a thousand seedlings for planting in the future.” These seedlings will mature and help fulfill the garden’s mission to provide fresh, nutritious food to students in need. Once harvested, the produce will be made available through SAU’s Mulerider Market, the University’s free food pantry that supports food security among students.
Additionally, our hardworking team of Fellows took on much-needed projects at Compassion’s Foundation, a local shelter providing safety and support to individuals escaping domestic violence. The team trimmed overgrown bushes and trees, shoveled excess dirt from the driveway, and organized areas inside the shelter. Their efforts transformed the outdoor space into a more welcoming and safe environment for residents.
“Our SAU+VISTA Fellows truly have a heart to serve those around them,” said Beth Camp, SAU+AmeriCorps VISTA Assistant Director. “Whether they’re planting seeds or lending a hand to community members, they’re making a difference everywhere they go. It’s inspiring to watch them lead with a smile on their face and laughter surrounding them!”
The SAU+AmeriCorps VISTA program continues to be a powerful force for positive change in Magnolia and beyond, demonstrating that service is not just a one-day event, but a way of life.
