ACTM Math Contest award winners for the southwest region
Southern Arkansas University’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science proudly hosted the annual ACTM Math Contest for the Southwest region on Saturday, March 1, 2025. The competition brought together 89 students from five regional schools, representing grades 8 through 12, to compete in six subject areas: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Statistics, Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry, and Calculus.
Following the exams, students had the opportunity to explore SAU’s game and animation design program by testing video games created by SAU students. They also engaged with instructor Eric Rogers to learn more about the program. Additionally, the President’s Ambassadors were on hand to share SAU items and to help recruit future Muleriders.
Students who placed first through third in their respective categories earned automatic invitations to the state-level ACTM competition, set to take place on April 26 at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. These top performers were also recognized with medals and cash prizes in honor of their achievements.

This marks the fifth consecutive year that Caroline Neeley organized the event at SAU, with invaluable support from faculty members who assisted in exam administration and logistics. The ACTM Math Contest has been a longstanding tradition in Arkansas for over 50 years, with SAU proudly serving as a host site for at least 40 of those years.
SAU extends its gratitude to the Dean’s Office of the College of Science and Engineering for sponsoring the cash prizes and to the President’s Ambassadors and Thomas Turner for their assistance in making the event a success.
