The United States Air Force Band of Mid-America’s Shades of Blue jazz ensemble will perform at Southern Arkansas University on Friday, April 11, 2025, in the Reynold’s Center Grand Hall. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the concert beginning at 7:00 p.m. This event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required.
Shades of Blue is an 18-member ensemble of professional enlisted musicians known for their dynamic performances, covering everything from traditional big band jazz and bebop to swing and modern jazz. Audiences can expect a diverse repertoire featuring the works of contemporary composers and jazz legends like Count Basie and Glenn Miller. The ensemble also showcases original compositions and arrangements by its talented members.
Over the years, Shades of Blue has shared the stage with renowned jazz artists such as Tex Benecke, Jamey Aebersold, Bobby Shew, Allen Vizzutti, Carmen Bradford, and many more. The ensemble is a sought-after performer at jazz festivals and clinics nationwide, bringing the rich tradition of American jazz to audiences across the country.
Jason Smith, director of jazz studies at SAU and a former United States Air Force Band member, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming performance: “It is an absolute honor to welcome the Shades of Blue Jazz Ensemble to SAU. As a former member of the Air Force Band, I know firsthand the incredible level of musicianship and dedication these performers bring to the stage. This concert is a fantastic opportunity for our students and the Magnolia community to experience world-class jazz right here at home.”
