Eleven faculty members and graduate students from the departments of Mathematics and Computer Science, Biology, and Engineering recently attended a workshop on using a High Performance Computing (HPC) system recently held on the SAU campus.
HPC is the engine behind some of today’s most groundbreaking discoveries and innovations. At its core, HPC harnesses the immense power of advanced computers to tackle problems that are far too complex or data-heavy for everyday machines. Capable of performing trillions of calculations in the blink of an eye, these systems allow researchers, scientists, and engineers to simulate intricate processes—from modeling climate change and exploring the mysteries of the universe, to accelerating medical breakthroughs and designing next-generation technology. Simply put, HPC is where speed meets scale to unlock new possibilities across countless fields.
The workshop was conducted by Dr. Recep Erol and Dr. Pawel Wolinski from the Arkansas High Performance Computing Center at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. The event was organized by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at SAU.
“The workshop was very helpful,” said Dr. Hong Cheng, chair of the department of Mathematics and Computer Science at SAU. “The workshop taught us how to use high profile computing.”
Participants in the class learned from the visiting professors during the workshop, that also included hands-on experience.
“During the workshop, Dr. Erol provided a hands-on demonstration on how to transfer computational workloads from local laptops to an HPC cluster, showcasing how HPC can significantly accelerate research,” said Cheng, who is a professor of math and computer science at SAU.
Those taking part in the workshop hope to use the information they gained for academic research.
Participants expressed strong interest in enhancing their computing capabilities through the resources offered by the HPC Computing Center, opening doors for interdisciplinary collaboration and research development.
