Tyson family with Grayson Chambless
In a world where career paths are as diverse as the people who walk them, the Tyson family stands out as a shining example of dedication, unity, and service in the healthcare profession, particularly in dentistry and nursing.
Dr. Jim Tyson, a proud 1993 graduate of Southern Arkansas University, began his journey in healthcare as a dentist in Hope, Arkansas. His wife, Kelly, works alongside him as a dental hygienist.
Their shared commitment to helping others laid the foundation for a remarkable family legacy—one now spanning generations. What started as a personal calling for Dr. Tyson and Kelly has blossomed into a multigenerational embrace of the healthcare professions, with the Tyson children proudly following in their parents’ footsteps.

Libby Tyson Chambless
The family’s achievements are not only a testament to their dedication but also to the strength of SAU’s healthcare programs. Their eldest daughter, Libby Tyson, graduated from SAU’s Department of Nursing in fall 2024. Known for her intelligence, empathy, and professionalism, Libby quickly transitioned into practice as a registered nurse. Just one day after graduation, she married her college sweetheart, Grayson Chambless, who himself completed the SAU nursing program in spring 2025. Together, they represent not only the strength of academic preparation but also the profound personal bonds forged through shared purpose and education, which are the cornerstone of the nursing community.
The story doesn’t end there. Sophy Tyson, Libby’s younger sister, is continuing the family tradition by entering her second semester in the SAU nursing program. Bright, driven, and inspired by the examples set by her family, Sophy is charting her course toward a future in nursing. Her commitment to the program serves as a testament to both her calling and the enduring influence of a family that has wholeheartedly embraced the values of healthcare, dedication, and clinical excellence, leaving a lasting impact on the nursing profession.

Dr. Karen Ainsworth Landry, chair of the Department of Nursing, reflects proudly on the Tyson family’s journey with admiration. “It is a rare and amazing experience to witness a family so deeply committed to the values of healthcare and nursing,” she shares. “The Tysons embody the heart of our program—compassionate care, academic excellence, and a spirit of service. Watching Libby and Grayson grow into outstanding nurses and seeing Sophy now follow in their footsteps is both inspiring and humbling. We are honored to be part of their story and look forward to all they will continue to contribute to the nursing profession.”
