Southern Arkansas University proudly shares its excellent representation at the National Association of Social Work-Arkansas Chapter 45th Annual Conference in Little Rock. The event, which took place in March, served as a platform for professionals and scholars in the field of social work to convene, exchange ideas, and collaborate towards addressing pressing societal challenges.
SAU’s delegation, comprising of faculty members and students from the social work department, made a significant impact throughout the conference, showcasing the institution’s commitment to excellence in social work education and practice. Faculty members in attendance were Mercedes Ray, Cortney Sherman, and Catiya Welch. Three social work students, Alexis Hayes, La’Kiya Jackson, and Diamond Muldrow, also participated in the conference.
Among the highlights of SAU’s participation was the presentation of research and posters by Muldrow and Jackson. These students were able to share and shed light on critical issues within the realm of social work. Jackson presented her work “Exploring Depression and Coping Among College Students: Implementing STAND as a Treatment Option,” which was selected as the 2024 Best Innovative Program award. Muldrow was equally successful as her work “Knowledge and Prevention of Sexual Transmitted Infections Among Rural College Students” was awarded the 2024 Best of Bachelors of Social Work Policy Research. Hayes also presented her research entitled, “Religiosity Among College Students.”
Mercedes Ray, assistant professor and program director of social work, shared, “Our students are able to attend the NASW Arkansas Conference with generous support from the SAU Foundation and other donors. The students’ independent research from their research methods course and their focus on innovative social work issues and practice helps them stand out above students at even the graduate level.” Ray emphasized, “We are so proud of them!”
The conference provided an invaluable opportunity for SAU representatives to engage in scholarly discussions, attend informative workshops, and network with esteemed professionals from across the state. SAU’s successful participation highlights its ongoing efforts to empower students and faculty members to actively engage in positive change in their communities.
