Whitney Brown, a Marine Biology major at Southern Arkansas University, has been named the 2021 College Disc Golf Women’s Individual National Champion. The native of Alexander, Arkansas, has returned to SAU for a second degree after graduating in May 2020 with an Exercise Science degree.
The men’s and women’s teams participated April 7-10 in the 2021 College Disc Golf National Championship in Marion, North Carolina.
Brown participated on the Women’s Disc Golf Team that won the National Championship in 2019 and currently works in the Mulerider Activity Center.
“I’ve improved a lot since 2019,” said Brown of her play. “On my first trip to the Nationals, I was still new to the game. I was going for the experience. This was a very good week.”
After Friday morning’s rounds, she found out that her scores had won her the title of Individual Golf Champion. “I played super-clean this morning,” Brown said. “I was able to finish the round four strokes ahead.”
Brown originally came to SAU for volleyball but decided to pursue a career in physical therapy, leading to her first undergraduate degree in Exercise Science. However, she has always gravitated toward oceans and subsequently decided to return for Marine Biology, in which she plans to pursue a career.
“We are extremely proud of Whitney and how well she has played this week at the Marion, North Carolina courses and congratulate her on being the College Disc Golf Women’s Individual National Champion,” said Sarah Adcox, SAU’s director of Student Affairs. “She is an amazing representative for SAU Disc Golf and we are incredibly proud for her to bring back this title for the second time.”
In unofficial results posted on Friday, April 9, Brown placed first in the Advanced Women’s Individual rankings. Jessica Harmon placed 15th in the rankings.
Disc golf has become an increasingly popular activity among students at Southern Arkansas University. The University provides an 18-hole disc golf course on the campus. Madi Chitwood won the Individual National Championship in 2018-2019; the Mulerider Disc Golf Women’s Team also won the National Championship that year.
The Mulerider Disc Golf team strives to promote the sport on and off campus and compete against other college teams for the national title.
