The Division of Continuing Education at Southern Arkansas University has an interesting array of nine affordable non-credit class options, including five classes for children, available for the public this summer.

Children’s Programs:
Swan Lake Ballet Camp
This camp is a unique opportunity for your small child to focus on ballet technique while being exposed to the music and choreography of one of the world’s most famous classic ballets, Swan Lake. Students will gain an appreciation for the music of Tchaikovsky while learning to move gracefully.

Youth Swimming
These comprehensive courses are certified through the American Red Cross. Each child will be placed according to his or her ability. Basic water safety will be taught, and the goal is to advance each child as much as possible. Class size for each is limited to 10.

Baby and Me Infant Swim
This beginner-level swim program puts parents in the pool with their baby as early as two months old. Our teachers work with parents to help develop the natural instincts that a child has for the water, as well as the primary skills of breath control and buoyancy. These classes are just as much fun for the parents as the babies. Class size is limited to eight students per session, and swim diapers and swimsuits are required.

Lego Day at SAU
Does your child enjoy building cars, trucks, landmarks or creating something of their own with Lego? If so, then he or she will think this is the place where everything is AWESOME! Participants will receive tips for building Lego kits, learn Lego trivia, and will have chances to win Lego prizes. Students will build and keep their own Lego kit with Lego Mini-figures. They will be also exposed to the basic steps in making a Lego movie using licensed Lego software. Parents are encouraged to participate; this is a family friendly event!

Children’s Art Workshop
Children will be involved in a hands-on, 1½ hour art experience involving painting, drawing, and 3-D art using various media. All materials will be supplied. The workshop will end with an “Artists’ Reception.” Class size is limited to 12 in each age group.

Scuba Diving for Beginners
Obtain the knowledge and skills required to become a P.A.D.I. certified instructor. The Professional Association of Diving Instructors is the largest and most recognized training program in the world. The course consists of classroom, pool sessions, and open water checkouts (Lake DeGray). Minimum age is 10. Class is limited to 6.

Digital Photography Basics
This course will help you understanding your camera beyond “AUTO” and take control of your camera’s shutter speeds, ISO, exposures, lighting, lenses, and depth of field. Class will also include basic photo-editing and instruction in Photoshop. You will need a digital camera (DSLR or fixed lens), tripod, and a jump drive. Class limited to 15.

Get Fit With Aquacize
This class includes a wide variety of water exercises that provide for cardiovascular strength, conditioning, and toning of muscles. Flotation devices will be provided for deep water exercises.

Tai Chi: Medicine in Motion
This Tai Chi is based on Sun Style Tai Chi, and was chosen because of its healing component, its unique Qigong. Qigong is an exercise that improves relaxation and vital energy. Tai Chi has the ability to improve mobility and balance. The program contains a carefully-constructed set of warming-up and cooling-down exercises, Qigong breathing exercises, a basic core six movements, an advanced extension six movements, and adaptations of the movements for older adults. This is an American Osteopathic Approved Tier III evidenced-based health promotion program.
