The Division of Continuing Education at Southern Arkansas University has an interesting variety of affordable non-credit class options available for the public this spring.

Aquacize is meeting from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from January 20 – May 7 at the SAU Aquatic Center. Sandi Alston is offering a wide variety of water exercises that provide for cardiovascular strength, conditioning, and toning of muscles. Flotation devices will be provided for deep water exercises. Fee is $60.
Water Yoga will meet from 6-7 p.m. on Wednesdays from January 21 – May 6 at the SAU Aquatic Center. Water yoga is a low-impact aquatic exercise, performing traditional yoga poses in water. This class will help you to develop strength, static balance, and range of motion. Yoga has been linked to decreased stress, heart rate, blood pressure, fatigue, and depression. Water yoga will help you focus on deep breathing and create a calm space in your day. Sandi Alston is the instructor. Fee is $60.
Birdwatching 101 will meet from 3-5 p.m. on Thursday’s from February 5-20 at SAU Business Building 205. This class will incorporate sight, sounds, and habitat to create a holistic approach to learning. The goal of the instructor, Don Kyle, is to pique your interest and motivate you to explore one of the world’s most beloved hobbies. A local field trip will provide time in the field to ask questions and sharpen your skills. Required Materials are binoculars and a bird book. Fee is $40.
English as a Second Language will meet from 6-7 p.m. on Mondays from January 26 – May 4 at SAU Wilson Building 327. This course is designed to help adults better understand the English language. This class will focus on conversation, reading, and writing, and is open to everyone no matter how much or little English they know. The instructor, Mitchell Bradford, is an English as a Second Language teacher at SAU and has experience with students from Latina America, the Middle East, and Asia. Bradford is a native speaker of English, fluent in Spanish and knows some French, Russian, and Mandarin Chinese. Fee is $40.

La clase está abierta a todos, sin importar lo mucho que se saben Inglés. El instructor es un maestro de Inglés como una Segunda Lengua a SAU y tiene experiencia con estudiantes de América Latina, el Oriente Medio, y Asia. El instructor es un hablante nativo de Inglés, con fluidez en español y puede hablar además algo de francés, ruso y mandarín.
Introduction to Spanish is set for 6-7 p.m. on Wednesdays from January 28 – May 6 in SAU Wilson 327. This course is designed to give you a solid foundation of the Spanish language. Special emphasis will be placed on vocabulary and oral expression within a cultural context. Principles of grammar will be introduced as you become more familiar with the language. Activities will include role-playing and interactive situations. Audio, magazine articles and literary texts will be used in this class. Mitchell Bradford is the instructor. Fee is $40.
How to Become a Private Investigator is scheduled for 5:30-9 p.m. on Tuesdays from April 7 – May 12 at SAU Peace Hall 206. Louis C. Roy, asst. professor of criminal justice at SAU, is the instructor. This class will cover the requirements to become a private investigator in the tri-state area. Topics will include where to locate information, how to find clients, rights and laws governing private investigators, and rules of evidence. Fee is $295, and includes 3-ring binder and copies of pertinent information.
Children’s Ballet is meeting in the SAU HKR Studio from 5-5:45 p.m. on Mondays from January 26 – May 4. The world of ballet will come alive while your child enjoys an introduction course designed especially for young dancers. Children will learn how to leap, twirl, arabesque, and more in this supportive class. In addition to ballet movements, the class teaches ease and skill of movement, creativity, grace, poise, discipline, and confidence. Watch your little one come home with a positive self-image and a great sense of accomplishment. Students must have a pair of tights, leotard, and ballet shoes. Beginner to intermediate levels welcome. Lauren Murphy is the instructor. Fee is $100.
The Littlest Mulerider will meet at the SAU Story Arena from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, and Tuesday, April 14. Bring your little one to meet SAU’s Mulerider mascot Payton Baird with mules Molly Ann and Molly C. Students will get up close and personal with our beloved mascot mules and learn what makes them a unique part of SAU’s history and tradition. Watch as your child learns, with instruction from Mulerider Payton, how to ride the mule and become an official SAU Mulerider! Class size is limited to 15. Fee is $45.
