Around 35 volunteers teamed up Saturday morning to complete several projects at the Boys and Girls Club of Magnolia for Making Magnolia Blossom’s June “Second Saturday” event.
Projects included trimming landscaping near the entrance and along the north side of the property, painting fences and lettering, replacing light bulbs on a scoreboard, trimming landscaping back from the batting cages, removing old bolts and wood from another batting cage, and repairing doors on a storage building.
“This was a wonderful partnership between Making Magnolia Blossom and the Boys and Girls Club. All the planning that Mr. [David] Smith had done in preparation of MMB arriving was so helpful, and I was so excited about how invested and welcoming they were,” said Deana Taylor, SAU’s community involvement coordinator. “It was also great that the volunteers who joined the effort included a mix from the Magnolia community and the SAU campus.”
MMB plans to also host its next Second Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon on July 11 at the Boys and Girls Club to help get the facilities in tip-top shape before the Club hosts the Babe Ruth Southwest Regional Softball Tournament.

Smith, Boys and Girls Club Executive Director, estimates the economic impact of the regional tournament on Magnolia to be upwards of around $3 million. He said they are anticipating around 60 teams and between 2,000-2,500 people to be in Magnolia for the tournament, which runs from July 13-18.
