The Southern Arkansas University STEM Center for K-12 Education along with the College of Science and Engineering will host a free one-day Science and Engineering Institute from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2015. The event is open to students in grades six through 10 and will be held at the University’s Science Center.
The Institute, made possible by the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts, will provide hands-on science workshops on nuclear radiation and dynamic electric motors. Students will learn how radiation is used to save lives, create energy, and detect fires. A discussion of safe handling of radioactive materials will precede experimenting with real radioactive materials.
While studying dynamic electric motors, attendees will see demonstrations of the DC electric generator and the DC electric motor. They will also learn the major components of the DC electric motor before using simple bits of copper wire, magnets, and batteries to construct their own electric motor.
