INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Southern Arkansas University athletic department has been awarded the 2013 NCAA Division II Award of Excellence for Community Engagement. The award was presented Friday morning during the Division II Identity Workshop at the NCAA national headquarters.
The Award of Excellence serves as the Division II National Championship for community engagement. The Muleriders were chosen for the national recognition as a result of the “Muleriders in Magnolia” campaign.
“It is a great honor for the work of our student-athletes to be recognized on a national level,” said SAU Director of Athletics Steve Browning. “We want our athletes to perform at the highest levels on the playing field and in the classroom, but through this focus on community engagement, they are learning to be difference makers in the community now and in the future. They have worked hard over the last year, and this award is a direct reflection of the quality of their work.”
“Muleriders in Magnolia” is an on-going community engagement activity that was established in an effort to connect Mulerider athletics back to the community of Magnolia. It became clear to many in the athletic department at Southern Arkansas, including Browning, that the community of Magnolia was some of the biggest supporters of Mulerider athletics, and that the relationship needed to be reciprocated.
“At any given athletic event on our campus, it is safe to say that a majority of the fans in the stands are members of the community of Magnolia,” notes Browning. “That is why it is so important for us to get out and give back to the community to show our appreciation for their support of Mulerider athletics. We also realize how significant of an impact our athletes, as role models, can make on the community.”
In that, one of the chief goals of the program was to not only get athletes out in the community, but to do so in a unified effort. Prior to this program, several teams did their own community engagement, but “Muleriders in Magnolia” allowed that to continue with a unified front for the athletic department.
For the calendar year of 2012, “Muleriders in Magnolia” saw a total of 132 student-athletes participate in community service activities on nine separate occasions. Organizations that student-athletes went to in the Magnolia community included: Central Elementary, Eastside Elementary, Magnolia Health and Rehab, McNeil Head Start, South Arkansas Youth Services, and Wee Care. During their time at these local organizations, student-athletes spent time decorating Magnolia Health and Rehab with Christmas decorations and they also interacted with youth by engaging in recreational activities.
“The athletes from SAU have been a big hit at Magnolia Health and Rehab,” noted hospital administrator Jeff Harrington. “From their visit in the fall, two of the athletes have decided to come back every week and play Bingo with our residents. The Christmas decorations were wonderful as well. Most of our residents wanted to leave them long after Christmas was over. I cannot express enough gratitude to these young men and women for what they are doing in the community.”
In the brief time that this community engagement project has been underway, the impact on the community, the Southern Arkansas campus, and the student-athletes of SAU has been overwhelmingly positive.
“It is great to see our student-athletes going into the community and making such a tremendous impact,” said SAU President Dr. David Rankin. “Receiving this award is a great testament to the hard work and dedication our student-athletes demonstrate on a daily basis.”
As a result of the welcoming sentiment, numerous student-athletes are going out in the community multiple times, and the community has begun to reach out back to the athletic department with new and exciting opportunities for community service projects as they have witness the genuine desire of the Mulerider athletic department to establish and maintain these relationships.
Community Involvement is at the heart of SAU’s Complete College Experience. In fact, SAU has earned a spot on the President’s Community Service Honor Roll for five straight years. In 2012, SAU was the only University in Arkansas to make it on the coveted Honor Roll with Distinction list.
