- Ronald Watson – The Certification Board of American Society for Quality (ASQ) announced that Ronald Watson, assistant professor of management in the SAU College of Business, has completed the requirements to be named as an ASQ-Certified Quality Engineer. As an ASQ CQE, Watson has proven proficiency in and a comprehension of quality engineering principles and practices. In order to sit for the Certified Quality Engineer examination, an individual must have eight years of work and/or experience related to the body of knowledge. A CQE is a professional who understands the principles of product and service quality, evaluation and control.
- Dr. Ganna Lyubartseva, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, recently published her article “Attendance and Student Performance in Undergraduate Chemistry Courses” in Education, Volume 133 (1), Fall 2012, pages 31-34. For the past three years at SAU Dr. Lyubartseva published 9 articles, 8 of them in peer-reviewed journals.
- Ken Green from the SAU College of Business and co-authors Jeremy Bellah and Pam Zelbst from Sam Houston State University have recently had their article “Unique TQM Practices and Logistics Performance” accepted for publication in the International Journal of Productivity and Quality Management. The authors surveyed 104 manufacturing managers and found that, of the three unique TQM practices (customer-focus, product design, and statistical process control), customer-focus had the largest impact on logistics performance.
- Dr. Misty LaCour’s research article entitled “Improving Pre-Kindergarten Children’s Attitude and Interest in Reading through a Parent Workshop on the use of Dialogic Reading Techniques” was recently accepted for publication in the journal Reading Improvement. Co-authors include Dr. Connie McDonald and Dr. Gina Thomason from Liberty University, as well as, Dr. Laura Tissington from University of West Florida.
- Dr. James Ulmer, Professor of English and Chair of the Department of English and foreign Languages, has had his collection of ghost stories, The Secret Life, published by Halcyon Press. - Rebecca Parnell, BSN Program Director; Stephanie Seymour, Assistant Professor of Nursing and SNA Faculty Advisor; Ginger Covington, Nursing Faculty and Simulation Lab Coordinator; and Caroline Hammond, Nursing Faculty attended a “SimChart” Training course over the summer in St. Louis sponsored by Elsevier. “SimChart” is an electronic medical record recently being piloted in the Department of Nursing in the first semester ADN and BSN students. The simulated EMR is a tool used by faculty to realistically prepare nursing students for electronic medical record documentation in health care.
- Pam Gouner joined the Department of Nursing as the new Student Nurses’ Association Faculty Advisor. Pam is an Assistant Professor of Nursing and will join forces with Stephanie Seymour in the advising role of the 100-plus-member chapter.
- The Department of Nursing Faculty teamed with the Student Nurses’ Association to raise $220.00 on August 31 for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief-“Responding to Hurricane Isaac.”
- Dr. Jeff Vickers, Assistant Professor of Music, attended World Saxophone Congress XVI to present several performances in July. The Congress, which is the largest gathering of professional saxophonists in the world, is held only once every three years. Performance applications are selected on a competitive basis by an international committee. Dr. Vickers presented three world-premiere performances of music written at his request. As a soloist, he presented Discoïdal by Thierry Alla (Bordeaux, France) and Four City Nocturnes by Carlos Micháns (Amsterdam, Netherlands). The Micháns commission was funded by a Fonds Podium Kunsten grant (Netherlands). Finally, Vickers presented the world-premiere of Concetto Spaziale, an alto saxophone trio by Robert Lemay (Sudbury, Canada). Dr. Vickers’ former SAU student, Matthew Mahaffey (BME 2011), also performed in the trio (substitute for original member).
