MAGNOLIA – Planning will soon begin for construction of a historic decorative sidewalk at Southern Arkansas University. The University recently received a $500 mini grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Department of Arkansas Heritage to support the project.
Once completed, the walkway will contain stained images of the original campus buildings. Grant funds will also assist in the preparation of accompanying interpretative materials to explain the historical importance of the Third District Agricultural School of 1909.
With matching funds from the University, the mini grant supports planning for the project titled “Arkansas’ 1909 Experiment with Agricultural Schools: SAU’s Original Campus.”
The first meeting of the planning committee for this project will be held in Room 101 of the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center on the SAU campus at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19. Members of this committee include SAU President Dr. David Rankin, Roger Giles, Dr. Ben Johnson, Steven Ochs, Molly Burns, John Rankin, and project director Dr. James Willis.
