The Office of Continuing Education at Southern Arkansas University will offer a series of continuing education courses to beat the winter time blahs and to encourage continual growth. All courses are open to the public.
• Introduction to Computers for Adults is designed to introduce adults to computer terminology, the use of hardware and software, sampling of the Internet, Windows and simple Windows programs. This class is for beginners and is offered on Tuesdays, Feb. 7 – Feb. 28, from 6 – 7 p.m. in Business 104. Fee is $50. Instructor is Jim McCollum.
• Landscape Design class is designed for homeowners interested in self-improvement of their property. Topics will include planning and installing new flower beds; updating existing flower beds; how and when to prune landscape plants; and a question-and-answer session. The class will be taught by a licensed landscape contractor and certified Arkansas nursery professional. The class will be located in Business 206 on Thursdays, Feb. 2-23, from 7 – 9 p.m. Fee is $50. Instructor is Marty Davis.
• Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People Do you want to learn the secrets and magical shortcuts of professional players? Do you want to learn chords, not just notes? In one enjoyable evening, you’ll learn all the chords you will need to play any song, any style and any key. If you can find middle C and know the meaning of Every Good Boy Does Fine, you already know enough to enroll in this workshop. If not, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope for a free pamphlet to Music Masters, 90 Molly Lane, Ringgold, Ga. 30736. You may then enroll with confidence. The course will be Wednesday, Feb. 1 from 6 – 9:30 p.m. in Business 207. Fee is $55 plus $25 for materials ($80 total). Instructor is David Haynes.
• Cake Decorating for Adults will teach basic skills and techniques of cake decorating. This course includes tips for a variety of embellishments, including borders, flowers, special effects and more. The class will include a discussion of colors, cake mixes and icing recipes. All materials will be supplied for use in the class in the Business building lounge on Tuesdays, Feb. 7-28, from 4 – 5 p.m. Cost is $60. Instructor is Shirley Berry.
• Children’s Art Workshop will be offered on Mondays, Feb. 6 – March 12, from 6 – 7 p.m. in Brinson 107. You will be involved in an hour of hands-on art experience with drawing, painting and 3-D art projects. All materials will be supplied. Class size is limited to 15. Patricia Leslie is the instructor and the fee is $50.
• Preteen and Teen’s Art Workshop will be offered on Mondays from Feb. 6 – March 12 from 7 – 8 p.m. in Brinson 107. Students will be involved in an hour of hands-on art experiences that will include, but not be limited to, drawing and painting projects. All materials supplied. Instructor is Patricia Leslie. Fee is $50.
• Senior Wellness program consists of exercises utilizing water applications. The Arthritis Foundation approves of all water exercises. Class is scheduled from 9 – 9:45 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Jan. 18 through May 4 at the SAU Pool. Sandi Alston is the instructor, and the cost of the program is $60.
• Aquacize will be Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 17-May 3, from 6 – 7 p.m. at the SAU Pool. This class includes a wide variety of water exercises that provide for cardiovascular conditioning, toning and strengthening of muscles. Floatation devices will be provided for deep water exercises. Instructor is Sandi Alston. Fee is $60.
• Scuba Diving for Beginners will help participants obtain the knowledge and skills required to become a Professional Association Diving Instructors certified diver. The P.A.D.I. is the largest and most recognized training program in the world. The course consists of classroom, pool sessions and open water checkouts at DeGray Lake and is held on Mondays, Jan. 23 – April 30, at the SAU pool and HKR 103. Clay Raborn is instructing. Fee is $239 and covers materials.
• Scuba Diving Refresher Course helps divers refresh their skills to build confidence and proficiency under the supervision of P.A.D.I professionals. Class size is limited. Class is held on Mondays, Jan. 23 – April 30, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the SAU pool. Instructor is Clay Raborn. Fee is $75 and includes equipment rental.
