Those attending the 2011 Celebration of Lights at Southern Arkansas University will enjoy a new feature: an outdoor ice skating rink.
The Celebration of Lights is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 1. The ice rink will be set up in the plaza of the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center and will be open from 3-7 p.m. Up to 20 people will be able to skate at one time. Skates will be provided in adult and children’s sizes.
“The Student Activities Board wanted to give something new and different to this year’s Celebration of Lights,” said Kandice Herron, director of campus activities. “I hope everyone gets to enjoy it.”
The synthetic ice rink is made up of a special polymer that best resembles the consistency of a solid piece of countertop, according to product information. The ice is hammered together like a giant puzzle using interlocking panels before being sprayed with a special solution that reduces friction and enhances glide and speed.
When attendees are not on the ice, there will be several other opportunities to enjoy the festive holiday event. Area vendors will be on site to help get a jump-start on your Christmas shopping list, Santa Claus will be available to take special requests and photos with children, and a full holiday meal will be served. Meal tickets are $3.75 for children and $7.50 and will be available at the door. Other events include the official lighting of the University Christmas lights and performances by the SAU band and choral groups as well as the Central Baptist Church hand bell choir.
