MAGNOLIA—The Arkansas Theta chapter of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Scholarship Society at Southern Arkansas University inducted 61 new members on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
Since 1922, Alpha Chi’s purpose has been to promote academic excellence and commendable character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve it. Alpha Chi is also nationally recognized by the Association of Honor Societies.
“Alpha Chi represents everyone – not just one discipline,” said Dr. Gayle White, professor of management and sponsor of SAU’s Alpha Chi chapter. “This makes us more competitive, and more distinct. Induction into this organization is one of the highest academic honors that can be received by students at Southern Arkansas University.”
Membership in the Arkansas Theta chapter of Alpha Chi is by invitation only through a nomination process completed by members of the SAU faculty. Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of juniors and seniors at the University.
“There are over 300 chapters of Alpha Chi in the United States and Puerto Rico. You are joining a very distinguished group of scholars, including Dan Rather, and persons who were winners of Time Magazine’s ‘Man of the Year’ and ‘Woman of the Year’ award,” White told inductees during the ceremony.
Junior Zach Seaton said, “It is a great honor to be inducted into Alpha Chi. Membership in such a prestigious organization will give me an edge in my career.”
Other faculty officiating at the event included Dr. Donna Allen, vice president for student affairs; Dr. David Crouse, interim vice president for academic affairs; Dr. Lisa Toms, dean of the College of Business; and Dr. Anna Trexler, professor of management and business communication.
As students lined up to ceremoniously sign the official Alpha Chi roster, White read the motto of the organization, taken from the Gospel of John: “You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.”
