MAGNOLIA – State Representative John Lowery of El Dorado will be the keynote speaker for Southern Arkansas University’s summer commencement exercises on Friday, Aug. 6. Graduate degrees will be presented to 48 students during a ceremony at 11 a.m., and undergraduate degrees will be presented to 50 students during a ceremony at 1 p.m. Both ceremonies will take place in the Grand Hall of the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center.
A lifelong resident of El Dorado, Lowery graduated from Southern State College (now SAU) in 1971 with a bachelor of business administration degree. He attended the University on a basketball scholarship.
Lowery is president of Lowery Oil, LLC, and Lowery International Ministries which was established with his wife as a ministry focusing on women in crisis and houses them in a sanctuary. He is a member and past chairman of the El Dorado Chamber of Commerce, past chairman of the El Dorado Boys and Girls Club, a board member of the El Dorado Industrial Development Corporation, and was an original board member of the Union County Water Conservation Board. He has also formerly served as president of Arkansas Ready-Mix Concrete Association, chairman of the board for the Oil Producers of Arkansas, and chairman of the board for the Museum of Natural Resources Advisory Committee.
As a member of the Arkansas House of Representatives, Lowery serves as chairman of the Revenue and Taxation Committee. He also serves on the Agriculture, Forestry and Economic Development Committee as well as the Joint Committee on Energy. As a result of his legislative work in the 87th General Assembly, he was awarded the first Golden Rig Award by the Arkansas Independent Producers and Royalty Owner’s Association and the 2009 Award of Merit from the Arkansas Environmental Federation.
Lowery and his wife, Susan, have six children and 10 grandchildren.
