Students will race dorm beds and canoes Saturday, October 3, as Southern Arkansas University hosts its annual Family Day.
The day begins at 11 a.m. with an organization fair by the SAU Duck Pond and an intersquad Mulerider baseball team at the field. The unique RHA 29th Annual Bed Race begins at 1 p.m. on Crescent Drive. SAU Dean of Students Sandra Smith said the bed race has been the highlight of Family Day for her since she was studying at a student at the University.
“We are excited for family day, this is an opportunity to invite families to come and see what is going on campus, Smith said. “This is a longstanding tradition on our campus that students look forward to every year. It is my favorite thing at SAU and it is a special event because you don’t see this at any other universities.”
The Bed Race was created by University Director of University Housing J Courson.
Courson said he thinks students benefit from the race because they get to know each other by creating their beds—students often decorate them in themes and colors that reflect their individual organizations.
“Students who might not otherwise get a chance to know each other can develop friendships while preparing for the bed race,” he said.
Family Day is open to students and families as well as community and alumni who want to come out and share the excitement. The following schedule will allow you and your family to plan their day.
