The Southern Arkansas University Honors College will be holding its matriculation ceremony at 4 p.m., Tuesday, August 25, in the Foundation Hall of the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center. Dr. Carson Davis, a physical science and technology professor, will provide the keynote address. SAU President Dr. David Rankin will also briefly speak along with Dr. Brian Canfield, vice president for academic affairs. A reception will follow immediately in Grand Hall.
This year’s enrollment in the program is around 30 so far, including 17 students from Arkansas and from the neighboring states of Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. However, several international students are expected to enroll in the program. The international students in the program represent various countries around the world, including places such as Canada, Bulgaria, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Yugoslavia, Nigeria, Vietnam, China, and India.
The new freshman class has an average ACT composite of score of 29 and a range of 26 to 34. Additionally, all had to submit an application that included their transcripts, letters of recommendation and two essays. Most will be living in the Honors Residence Hall where they will take their first honors course, honors seminar. The seminar course includes materials and information designed to help them successfully adapt to college life and to begin the process of finding a college major. Only two have declared a major so far, so the other 28 remain undecided.
Dr. Ed Kardas, a psychology professor, and director of the Honors College said he is looking forward to this year with this bright group of students.
“As the new director, I am looking forward to teaching this talented group of students, as I am sure are the rest of our Honors College faculty,” Kardas said.
