MAGNOLIA, Ark. —Women who are pursing a degree in agriculture or who are simply interested in agriculture at Southern Arkansas University are welcome to join a new organization on campus known as Mulerider Agri Women.
Founded officially in the spring 2007, but with an official kick start this fall, the group already has 26 members said Dr. Penny Haase-Wittler, sponsor and an assistant professor of agriculture and education at SAU. Haase-Wittler said one of the main focuses of the group is to provide education about the different facets of agriculture.
“The students want to teach people that yes, agriculture is about farming, but it is also so much more. There are jobs in agriculture in teaching, business, science, all possible fields,” Haase-Wittler said.
Besides providing education about agriculture, the group also plans to do community service projects such as visiting with nursing home residents and helping area churches with projects.
The group is open to any freshman through senior level student at SAU with at least a 2.5 grade point average. Dues are $15 per year, $10 of which goes to the group’s national organization, the American Agri-Women, and $5 which covers local fees.
