MAGNOLIA—Whether a person finds writing a joy or joyless, the Writing Center at Southern Arkansas University is open for business and students trained to meet your needs as a writer are ready to help.
The center, located on the first floor of the library in Magale 101, provides face-to-face assistance for students with any number of skill sets, said Kimberly Shirley, a writing consultant in her senior year as an accounting and finance major. The center is so helpful that consultants also use the services to make sure their papers are polished before turning them in for a grade.
“I will get clarification (from the consultants) about what is not easy to understand in the paper, and have them help me on organization to make sure that it all makes sense, not just to me, but to the reader,” Shirley said.
For those who can not make it to the library for help on their writing, there is also an option to log on to MuleWriters where writing assistance is provided online. Hours for the center are 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.
Dr. Elizabeth Davis, chair of the English and Foreign Language said sometimes students just need to see a friendly face willing to take the time to look at their work and help them in the right direction.
“They don’t tell students what to do but help students find out what they want to say,” Davis said.
Many times students are hooked on the services at the center after the first visit she said. Walk-ins are welcome and appointments can be made in person, via email or over the phone. You can call the center at 235-4211 or send an email to writingcenter@saumag.edu.
The Writing Center is directed by Dr. Shannin Schroeder.
