MAGNOLIA, Ark. –Phi Mu of Southern Arkansas University will sponsor the Miss SAU Scholarship Pageant from 7 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, at Harton Theatre on the University campus.
Miss Southern Arkansas University is a scholarship pageant that takes place annually during the fall semester and is a preliminary to the Miss Arkansas Pageant. Summer Carter, the reigning Miss Southern Arkansas University, will crown a new queen during this event. Carter is a senior early childhood education major from Fouke, Ark.
Among those competing for Miss Southern Arkansas University are Nakita Artis, a sophomore middle school education major from El Dorado, Ark.; Lora Callicott, a sophomore nursing major from Magnolia, Ark.; Kayleigh Collins, a sophomore finance major from Hope, Ark.; Sarah Gatliff, a sophomore with an undecided major from Murfressboro, Ark.; Amber Hathorn, a junior pre-nursing major from Minden, La.; and Beth Monroe, a senior English major from Hope, Ark.
There are four categories in which contestants are judged: interview, talent, evening gown, and lifestyle and fitness. Each contestant must complete a critical issue statement. This statement is intended to give each contestant a platform involving an issue that affects society in general or women in particular. Contestants will be interviewed about their chosen issue and asked a related question on stage during the evening gown competition.
A new addition to the Miss America program this year is a $100 donation to Children’s Miracle Network—Miss America’s national platform—from all local preliminary contestants.
Scholarship awards will be given. Miss SAU 2008 will be awarded two full semesters of tuition and the First Runner-Up will receive one full semester of tuition. The Second Runner-Up and Talent Winner will each be awarded a $400 scholarship. Admission to the pageant is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under and SAU students with student identification.
