MAGNOLIA, Ark.— Southern Arkansas University and the U. S. Smokeless Tobacco Company will sponsor a “Tobacco Harm Reduction Forum” from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Monday, October 8 in the Grand Hall of the Donald W. Reynolds Campus and Community Center.
The featured panelist will be Jeff Stier, an attorney and associate director of the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH). ACSH is a non-profit, public health consumer advocacy organization dedicated to promoting sound science in public health.
Stier has been a member since 1997, and has represented ACSH on World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, and CNBC, as well as various radio talk shows. His writings have also been featured in The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Newsweek, and other major publications.
Stier will discuss tobacco and the various health-related issues of both cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products. A panel of local health officials and students will discuss their stand on tobacco-related issues and answer questions from the audience. A reception will be held in the Grand Hall following the discussion.
Stier has 10 years of experience with tobacco issues.
“I look forward to sharing my perspective on health issues related to tobacco and health. With the possibility of changes in the legislative and regulatory environment, now is an important time to explore some interesting and controversial issues, such as the complacency over current quit rates, as well as the issue of harm reduction,” Stier said.
This event is funded by an unrestricted grant form the U. S. Smokeless Tobacco Company.
Admission is free and open to the public and all SAU students. More information on Stier or the American Council on Science and Health is available at www.acsh.org.
